AsmAsm study manual exam p pdfThis ASM Predictive Analytics (PA) study manual is designed to show students how to perform the tasks they are most likely to encounter in an exam setting in the most efficient way possible using the R packages that will be provided at the exam. It also gives students an opportunity to practice writing and running R code for these tasks and compare their code to sample solutions.
Topics covered include:
Exam
  • Setting up and running R functions for fitting generalized linear models, decision trees and regularized regression.
  • Interpreting the output produced by R.
  • Using various R functions to assess model fit, select model features and determine the values of hyperparameters.
  • Performing data analysis and producing high-quality graphs in R.
  • Tips and advice for writing a high-quality executive summary and pitfalls to avoid.
R is a powerful statistical programming language that allows one to easily and efficiently perform the statistical learning algorithms that students learned about in Exam SRM but its open-source nature means that there can be many different ways of performing the same task. This can cause confusion for students who are new to R and also creates challenges for more experienced users since only a selection of the available R packages will be provided at the exam site. This manual shows students how to do what they will need to do on the exam using the tools that will be available to them.

Exam PA (Predictive Analytics) is a significantly different type of actuarial exam and requires a different approach for preparation. Instead of 30 or 40 different multiple choice questions that can be solved using a handheld calculator, Exam PA gives students a single modeling problem, which is intended to be representative of the kind of real-life problem that an actuary working in data science might encounter, and expects students to use R Studio to perform a series of defined tasks and ultimately arrive at a solution. Students are required to develop chunks of R code to solve the various tasks and prepare an executive summary that describes the proposed solution in a way that is suitable for a non-technical audience. The student’s grade is based on the technical quality of the analysis, the R-Markdown file submitted and the quality of written communication demonstrated in the executive summary.
This manual will be a valuable study resource for students with little or no prior experience in R as well as students who use R in their everyday jobs.

Datasets used in the manual that are not publicly available will be uploaded to ActuarialLearning.com. Purchasers of the manual will be provided a key code that they can use to access and download these datasets. An R Markdown file with R code chunks corresponding to a selection of the examples and problems in the manual will also be accessible with the key code.
This manual can be purchased at the Actuarial Bookstore or ACTEX Learning.
They have pdfs for all the questions/solutions for each section and for the practice exams when you get through it all (although I preferred the CBT experience). All of the formulas you will need are downloadable. They do not have anything to download that you can walk through while listening to the lesson. Unfortunately, all of that portion is online lecture, so if you have taught yourself to zone out in lecture class over the years >me< you end up having to listen to the lesson mutliple times. :P That being said though, Dave is a great teacher and tries to incorporate humor to keep you entertained.
I would agree with the Gillotine on the practice tests. ASM has 20 and TIA had like 7-8 (the number escapes me now). I only did the first 5 in ASM. I tried #6, failed miserably after getting great scores on the first 5, and decided my limited time resources would be better used on a different testing avenue. I also focussed on the first 4 in TIA since those are free and everyone uses them so I was able to benchmark against other people's scores. I did all the TIA exams but the first 4 were the only ones I did repeatedly. What helped me most in the practice exam department was getting a 30 day access to ADAPT. It is an online practice test program and adjusts the question difficulty to how well you are scoring. After taking several of the ADAPT tests I went back and retook the TIA exams and they were a breeze. Everyone has their own strategy and that was mine, but you might find something better that works for you.
The Actex tests were not as helpful for me. I don't feel the questions were worded as similar to the exam problems and although I did a few, I don't think they helped me out personally as well as some of the other practice test options. I don't think it is a horrible resource, the more questions you do the better, just wasn't for me.
